recovering partial files

Part of a suspect graphic is better than no graphic at all. Because most software that opens graphic files will display an error if it's confronted with a partial file, creating graphic files with the last few lines of image data missing is an easy way to make graphics difficult to access.

Such a file would appear to be unreadable to anyone who doesn't know why it purports to be damaged.

Graphic Workshop will not convert or otherwise process partially damaged files, but it can be made to view them, and to save them to valid files from its View mode.

If you encounter a graphic file that won't read properly – and you've determined that it's not simply named with the wrong extension – attempt to view it by double-clicking on it in a Graphic Workshop Professional browser window. You'll probably see a prompt telling you that you have attempted to view a damaged file. You'll be asked if you wish to view a partial image. Click on Yes to proceed.

If View mode shows you enough of the graphic in question to make it worth keeping the image, select Save As from the Picture menu in the View window and save the graphic to a new file, in whichever format you prefer. The resulting file will be a complete, viewable image with as much of the original graphic as was read by View mode, and a black area for the rest of the picture.
